Obtaining healthcare in America can be a challenge for anyone, whether it’s due to cost, amount of coverage, or various systemic barriers. The disability population in particular will deal with not only systemic barriers, but physical and programmatic ones as well. While the ADA is there to protect people with disabilities, that doesn’t always mean that it will prevent health care services from causing issues for their patients. This could include a lack of willingness to provide necessary treatments or therapies, discrimination, and assumptions and stereotypes around a specific group of people based on their disability. This extremely informative article by Disability Rights Education & Defense Fund (DREDF) goes in depth on this issue and provides resources for you to peruse.
