International Day for Tolerance: November 16th

On November 16th, 1995, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s (UNESCO) Member States adopted a Declaration of Principles on Tolerance. A standout quote from the Principles on Tolerance, “It is respect and appreciation of the rich variety of our world’s cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human. Tolerance recognizes the universal human rights and fundamental freedoms of others. People are naturally diverse; only tolerance can ensure the survival of mixed communities in every region of the globe.”

On this upcoming November 16th on the International Day for Tolerance, here are some things to keep in mind:

  1. Fighting intolerance requires law.
  2. Fighting intolerance requires education.
  3. Fighting intolerance requires access to information.
  4. Fighting intolerance requires individual awareness.
  5. Fighting intolerance requires local solutions.
