March is the time each year for observing Brain Injury Awareness Month, led by the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA). According to the BIAA, there are more than 5.3 million people in the United States who are living with a permanent brain injury-related disability— which comes out to about 1 in every 60 people. For the next two years, the theme of the campaign will be #MoreThanMyBrainInjury in order to bring about education and awareness on what it’s like to live with a brain injury— an often “misunderstood, misdiagnosed, underfunded neurological disease.” Not only does the mission of this campaign hope to raise understanding, but also to reduce the stigma associated with having a brain injury, illustrate the diversity of injury, improving the care and support for individuals and their families, and much more. Check out the official site to learn more about the BIAA, the current campaign, and other ways you can get involved!
